Ahead of Toolfair in Coventry later this week, we spoke to plumber, gas engineer and social media royalty Peter Booth (aka PB Plumber) about trade shows, social media ‘fame’ and what he hopes to see at the Ricoh.
|1.Do you enjoy going to trade shows?
Yes, I really enjoy a good trade show. It’s a chance to get hands on with the latest products and innovations, meet like-minded people, talk to the manufacturers’ representatives and, most importantly, spend money on tools with some great show prices.
2.What’s the best thing about them? And the worst?
Best thing about a trade show for me is seeing tools up close and having a real ‘try before you buy’ experience.
The worst thing is missing a day’s work when you are self employed, but you’ve got to allow yourself some fun days out or what’s the point?
3.Busy tradespeople often say it’s too hard taking time off for trade shows – do you think it can be worth losing a day’s money to go to a show?
I don’t know people’s circumstances to comment on missing money, but for me I’d rather have a day off work to enjoy myself and do something fun and interesting than work all the time. And trade shows aren’t that frequent!
4.You’re big on Twitter, is it your fave social media platform? Why?
I love Twitter, being self employed can be a lonely job, being part of the Twitter community is almost like I’m working with a team of mates. Need advice – tweet. Need some encouragement – tweet. Wanna show off your hard work – tweet. It’s a brilliant platform for the trades. Every day is a school day and I have been lucky enough to get some great opportunities because of it.
5.What do you think of LinkedIn for the trades? Useful?
I’ve recently started using LinkedIn and it’s been interesting. I take it more seriously than I do my Twitter, like I’m talking to potential business connections, not my plumber mates.
6.What are you most looking forward to seeing at Toolfair?
I’m most looking forward to walking in and feeling the atmosphere and also the Wera tools stand as they are a well known favourite of mine.
If you’re going I look forward to seeing you there, come and say hello.
7.Do people see you at shows and ask for your autograph (or a selfie)?
Nobody has ever asked me for my autograph at a show and I hope it stays that way, I never want to take myself that seriously, I’m just a plumber from Loughborough, just one of the lads.
Don’t mind a selfie just don’t like holding that smile for too long.
See Peter at Toolfair in Coventry this week and connect with him on Twitter @pbplumber. The show is on 21st and 22nd September – registration is free and all visitors get free parking and a free bacon roll.
